Belgian Flatlander Time Trials to Victory
Europe was gradually recovering from the WW2, but Spain remained politically isolated. To shed the political perceptions in Spain, the 1947 Vuelta a Espana sought out and warmly welcomed the elite cycling stars of Europe.
Two former Vuelta champions, Julian Berrendero and Delio Rodriguez (record holder for most stage wins), joined defending champion Dalmacio Langarica to form an exceptionally talented Spanish contingent.

1947 Vuelta a Espana Race Raoute Details |
Race Summary:
Stage 1: Rodriguez (Vuelta record holder for most stage wins) won the opening stage from Madrid to Albacete and put on the first Race leader’s White Jersey.
Stage 11: The penultimate stage in 1947 came on eleventh stage from San Sebastian to Bilbao. Climber Julian Berrendero aggressively attacked the peloton on the climb of the Puerto de Urkiola but was unable to shed his main rivals. However, the decisive breakaway of the day did not escape until late on the climb of the Puerto de Sollube. Martin Mancisidor led Pedro Font, Felix Adriano, and talented Manuel Costa over the summit and into the finish in Bilboa. Talented Italian Felix Adriano won the breakaway sprint in front of Costa and Mancisidor. The GC tightened as the breakaway gained two minutes on overall leader Delio Rodriguez and significantly eight minutes on Belgian Edouard Van Dyck.
Stage 12: On the twelfth stage from Bilbao to Santander, Manuel Costa alertly joined a breakaway group and finished over 8 minutes in front of the race leader. Delio Rodriguez struggled on a brutal climb and held onto a vehicle. He was penalized an additional 10 minutes for the violation. Costa had his own problems and received a 2-minute penalty for an illegal bike change. When the overall GC times were calculated Costa's 8-minute time gain was enough to take the race lead.
Stage 16b: The hard mountain stages were complete, and the race headed to flatter terrain. The racecourse had 2 crucial Individual Time Trial stages. The second section of the sixteenth stage was the first “race of truth.” Powerful Belgian Edouard Van Dyck made up 2'06” of his 2'21” deficit to Costa in the GC. The race had eight stages to go, and the excitement was building.
Stage 22: The ultimate showdown came on the Stage 22 individual time trial. Again, the Belgian powered his way to the stage win, gaining over 4 minutes on the race leader Costa. This margin proved to be enough for the race lead.
Stage 24: Edouard Van Dyck rode into the finish in Madrid’s Metropolitan Stadium for the Grand Vuelta a Espana victory. The huge crown of 50,000 people showed enthusiastic respect for the valiant effort of Spanish hero Manuel Costa and offered him a resounding ovation.
